Jonathan is an instructor for Swift Water Rescue, a specialised form of technical rescue focusing on rescuing individuals from fast moving water, often in river environments.
Jonathan displays remarkable professionalism and commitment to his lifeguarding role from the moment he arrives at the pool until the last swimmer has left the pool. On arrival at the pool he is meticulous in checking all aspects of the safety equipment at the venue, including the first aid kit, defibrillator, and poolside safety/rescue equipment. He is keenly aware of any hazards in the pool and pool area – broken tiles, lane ropes and attachments for example.
From the moment the first swimmer enters the pool area, Jonathan is vigilant and completely focussed on the safety and wellbeing of swimmers, always being the first person to identify any swimmer in distress. His example sets the standard for other lifeguards, most of whom aspire to his exemplary practice.
Jonathan is very personable and deals with any potentially hazardous behaviour with diplomacy and courtesy. He is friendly and encouraging and his support of less able swimmers inspires confidence.
It is no exaggeration to say that Jonathan’s support has been integral to the success of Swimarathon over the last 10+ years and we are greatly indebted to him and to David Powell who introduced us to Jonathan.
As recognition of Jonathan’s service to the community, we were delighted to present him with a ComVoc Award for service to the community. As part of the award, £300 was donated to his chosen charity, St Peter’s Hospice.
Jonathan Chambers has generously agreed to be a lifeguard at our annual Charity Swimarathon every year for over ten years.
