ETHIOPIA
It is the oldest country in Africa first founded in 980 bc

  • It is the second most populated country in Africa with a population of over 129 million people, making it second after Nigeria.
  • Coffee was first discovered in Ethiopia.
  • Ethiopia uses a 13-month calendar.
  • Addis Ababa, Ethiopia's capital city is the highest capital city in Africa.
  • The Afar region is one of the hottest areas on Earth, it is home to a volcano with two active lava lakes.

WHO ARE WE

  • We partner with local Ethiopian local organisations, to provide sustainable support for people in Ethiopia who need it most.
  • Ethiopiaid was founded by Sir Alec Reed CBE. After returning from Ethiopia and witnessing what many people might expect – widespread hardship and poverty, he knew that it would take something simple to make a huge difference. He established the partner-led model in 1989 and since then it continues to be effective and demonstrates our commitment to locally led development.
  • Our partners depth of local knowledge combined with technical understanding, means their programmes are responsive to local culture and have strong community engagement
  • Through bi-annual monitoring and evaluation we facilitate agile partnerships, that mean projects can be continuously refined and developed.

MATERNAL HEALTH

For many women, especially in rural regions, there is no choice but to give birth at home without the assistance of trained midwives. Important progress is being made to improve maternal healthcare, yet maternal mortality rates remain high. Through our maternal health projects we: - Improve access to maternal healthcare - Ensure women have access to antenatal and post-natal care - Work to prevent and treat obstetric fistula (a childbirth injury caused by obstructed, prolonged labour) - Help women make informed choices about their future.

WOMEN AND GIRLS

Inequality can affect girls from the moment they are born. Many young girls undergo harmful practices such as female genital mutilation (FGM), and despite child marriage being illegal in Ethiopia, 40% of girls are married by the age of 18. We believe girls and women are the key to building long-term change. We work with our partners, APDA, Wings of Healing &  Studio Samuel by

*Raising awareness of the dangers of FGM and child marriage, to bring an end to these harmful practices

*Saving lives by raising awareness and providing free screening and treatment for cervical cancer.

*Building safe, inclusive communities where the voices of women and girls are heard.

EDUCATION

We remove barriers to education, provide equal opportunities, and enable the next generation of decision-makers to reach their full potential so they can make their own choices for the future.

LIVING WITH DISABILITIES

People living with disabilities in Ethiopia are often overlooked and many are unable to access education and healthcare. These challenges can seem impossible to those who may live in rural areas or are unable to access medical assistance. But we know it is possible for these children and adults tobe active members of their communities. We work with our partners to:

  • Create a disability-inclusive society across Ethiopia
  • Foster community awareness to remove stigma around disability
  • Provide access to quality education for children with Special Educational Needs

HEALTH AND WELFARE

EthiopiAid provide healthcare, support and dignity to the vulnerable, including the elderly, palliative care patients, and orphaned children.
