Geoffrey Lock Obituary

Friday 24th December 2021

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Geoffrey Lock, the devoted husband of Cecilia to whom we offer our sincere condolences.

Geoff, as we affectionately knew him, was born in Lyminge, Kent, in 1942. At the age of five the Lock family emigrated to Rhodesia in 1947 and later to Kenya in 1950. It was there that Geoff completed school and served for a while in the Kenya Regiment before entering Queens University, Belfast where he studied Economics. Soon after graduating he joined Barclays Bank, based in London, where he happily accepted an opportunity to join their overseas service and subsequently worked in the West Indies, Seychelles, Zambia and eventually returned to Kenya. He met Cecilia while in Ghana and after their marriage they lived in Zambia, Kenya and Ethiopia.

On retiring Geoff and Cecilia settled in Clifton but returned frequently to their second home in Ghana.

Among Geoff's many pleasures during his latter years were travelling, keeping fit by walking and working out at the gym, singing in a choir, history, being patriarch of the family and playing with the younger generations.

Geoff combined his knowledge, skills and faith to provide service to many local and overseas charities and this quickly became apparent when he joined Rotary in 2009. He particularly sought to sit on those committees concerned with promoting 'better life' conditions for the most deprived members of society, both at home and throughout the world. He received a Paul Harris Fellowship award for services to Rotary where he served as president in 2011 and as chairman of the International committeee until his death this month.

He was also a trustee of the Gateway Club providing social and recreational activities for people with learning difficulties in Bristol.

Geoff leaves behind Cecilia and two daughters, Kathy and Julia, a brother John and sister Ann as well as a host of friends including members of the Rotary Club of Clifton, all of whom will miss him greatly.

 Footnote.

Geoff will be cremated at Canford Crematorium, Canford Lane, Westbury on Trym on Tuesday 11th of January at 10.30am. Family and Friends are welcome to attend. The commital will be live streamed and a recording made available. A link will be provided nearer the time.

This will be followed at 11.30am by a service at Christ Church, Clifton where refreshments and a light lunch will be served following the service.

Will you please advise Jeremy Floyd if you wish to attend.
