Motivation, a Bristol based charity presentation by Amanda Wilkinson

Wednesday 5th March 2025

Glasses, hearing aids and wheelchairs - known as assistive technology or AT – are essential for a healthy, productive and independent life. In fact, they are so vital that access to AT is a human right, enshrined in the United Nations’ Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

However in countries like India, Kenya, Malawi and Uganda, less than 10% of people have the wheelchair they are entitled to. And even with a wheelchair, people face a world full of badly designed buildings, inaccessible transport, discrimination and negative stereotypes.

Amanda focused on the cost effective development of specialist long lasting wheelchairs and making them available to those in need.

Motivation is also about Making Space for Disability. It offers a platform for highlighting the systemic inequalities that disabled people experience every day and presents practical and viable solutions for creating a more equitable, inclusive, and autonomous world for everyone.

To achieve that, we collaborate closely with partners, including disabled people’s organisations, clinics, NGOs, charities, outreach programmes, sports clubs, state governments and many others.   We lobby, we advocate, we consult, we listen, we facilitate, we partner, we provide, we train, we work with and support communities to make space for disability.

Together, we can dismantle physical, institutional and social barriers, so that thousands of people who experience disability can take their rightful place in education, employment, livelihoods, play, family and social life.

This is the work we do with our partners to design, deliver, learn, share and inspire the changes needed…
