Rotary Young Musician Competition

Friday 23rd January 2026

First to entertain us was violinist Emilia Eggers from Redmaids School, accompanied by Helen Reid.

Two classical compositions, Violin Concieto by Mendelson and Sonata 3, Largo were delivered with great sensitivity and were a fine entertainment to commence the concert.

Next came flautist Yat Ching Tsang (Eunice) from Thornbury accompanied by Jonny Davies,

She delivered three numbers, a classical piece, Fantasie by Faure, followed by 2 contemporary compositions, Sea Echo by Sally Adams and Hypnosis by Ian Clarke.

Before the interval we heard another flautist played three pieces, two classics and one contemporary.

The flute this time was in the hands of Tsz Wan (Jana) Wong from Clifton High School and she was accompanied by Helen Mills. Madrigal composed by Phillipe Gaubert and Pan et les Bergers by Jules Mouquet were followed by Kokopeli written by American Katherine Hoover.

The quick succession of the two flautists provided the opportunity to compare both their choices of music and quality of performance which possibly helped the judges.

Following the interval yet another wind instrument followed as we were entertained by Lucas Wong on oboe accompanied by Mathew Nicholls.

Two sonatas, one by Saint-Saens and the other by Poulenc were followed by Air de Ballet written by Paul Rougnon. We were impressed by Lucas's enthusiasm. His body movements showed that he was clearly enjoyed playing his music as much as we enjoyed listening to it.

The final performance of the evening arrived all too soon in the form of Hannah Quia Yi Yap of Millfield School, Street.

The Compere for the evening, Rotarian Brian Snary, lifted the lid on the grand piano, Hannah adjusted her stool and there commenced 15 minutes or so of the most exciting, vibrant, skilled piano playing I have heard from a young pianist in many years. The selection of pieces provided variety for the audience and tests of skill for the judges to mark their score sheets.

The volume and length of applause clearly indicated the appreciation ot the audience!

In the bar, whilst the judges considered their decisions, the talk was of only one subject! Who would come second?

On returning to our seats District Governor Anne Bartholmew spoke of our gratitude to all concerned with staging the event

The Chair of the Adjudicators congratulated all the performers for the outstanding qualities they had demonstrated and expressed the view that they had all the qualities to become professsional musicians ifthe chose to follow that career path.

And then the results!

Violinist Emilia Eggers was awarded runner-up and flautist Tsz Wan Wong came third.

This wonderful evening came to an end with the audience happy that quality music is assured for many

years to come !
